The Eighth Stage of 2023 “UPC Foreign Language Corner” Met with Success

Held on the evening of May 19th in the U-Shape Plaza and Room 346 of Arts & Science Building, the eighth stage of the Foreign Language Corner of UPC was themed with How can we reduce carbon footprints in college and Beautiful Love in Chinese and Russian Poetry. The event was organized by Postgraduate Department of Foreign Language Teaching, Department of Russian Language and Literature and the SFS General Office and Youth League Committee of SFS, with English Class 2101, Russian Class 2001 and 2101 taking on the mantle of undertaking the event. The hosts and hostesses for English Corner and Russian Corner were Gao Xiao, a graduate student majoring in English Interpreting, Guo Zhijing from Class 2101 of English major, and Zhang Shijin from Class 2001 of Russian major. Teachers from Postgraduate Department of Foreign Language Teaching and Department of Russian Language and Literature, as well as foreign teachers David and Samuel, participated in the event and served as tutors. More than 400 teachers and students from all majors in UPC attended.

The English Corner persisted a collaborative effort between educators and students. During the sessions, students self-organized into distinct groups. Guided by teachers, they had in-depth discussions on the theme “How can we reduce carbon footprints in college”. Everyone on site were enthusiastic, creating a cheerful atmosphere. They expressed their views on low-carbon lifestyle and gained deep insights into the vision of “green development” and low-carbon and environmental protection” with their sense of responsibility and the awareness of environmental protection raised. They said they would make strenuous efforts to be an advocator, practitioner and promoter of environmental protection in the future.

The Russian corner, themed with “Beautiful Love in Chinese and Russian Poetry”, commenced with the distinguished poets and their works throughout Russian history. After that, students participating in this event read Thou and You, I Loved You, To Kane and other great works written by Pushkin while Mr. Юрий shared with them poetic rhythm and other literature related knowledge.

Contestants were actively involved in the final contest. After the intense competition, Zhou Zhaowen, an international student from School of Petroleum Engineering and Lu Jinyu from School of Foreign Studies won the English Corner and the Russian Corner respectively. At the end of this event, many students expressed their thanks to the Foreign Language Corner during which they had gained a lot through exchanging ideas with each other. “It is a lot of fun and I’m very happy to be the winner of the English Corner.” said Zhou Zhaowen. He also added that the Foreign Language Corner provided a platform for him to communicate with teachers and students from different specialties, an event he would sure to attend regularly and actively.

The UPC Foreign Language Corner, a joint initiative by the School of Foreign Studies and relevant functional departments, has adopted the motto of “Practice Together, Progress Together”. It sets up a platform for teachers and students to exchange and learn foreign languages, creating a lively atmosphere for language practice. The Corner is a key step to cultivate national pride and global perspectives among students, developing them to their full potential and making further progress.
