Development Review: The Academic English Department traces its origins to the Basic Department Foreign Language Teaching and Research Office, founded in 1953, the College English Department II of Foreign Language Department established in 1989, the College English Department II of School of Foreign Languages established in 2002, the College English Department II of School of Liberal Arts in 2011, and was renamed Academic English Department of School of Foreign Languages in October 2020.

Faculty Team: The department currently has 27 teachers, including 3 professors, 14 associate professors, and 10 lecturers, with 1 person awarded the title of “Taishan Scholar Youth Expert” in Shandong Province. Among the teaching staff, there is 1 person with a doctoral degree, 4 doctoral candidates, 1 doctoral supervisor, and 10 master’s supervisors. 5 teachers have studied abroad in universities in the UK, Australia, and New Zealand.

Educational Philosophy: The teaching team fully integrates online and offline teaching models, creating an academic English writing learning space to fully meet students’ diverse learning needs for professional study, international communication, further education, and employment. It cultivates students’ critical thinking, communication and coordination skills, and academic English abilities, helping the school to cultivate “double first-class” professional talents.

Teaching and Research: The department mainly undertakes the academic English teaching tasks for the second-year students of non-English major in the university, offering courses in energy, science and engineering, and humanities according to different majors. Some teachers are also responsible for postgraduate teaching tasks, with an average annual teaching load of more than 400 hours per faculty member. The teaching team continuously improves the teaching quality and level, with 1 person winning the first prize in the Shandong Province Youth Teacher Lecture Competition, and 2 people winning awards in competitions such as the “Foreign Language Teaching Star” competition. 1 person was awarded the title of “Outstanding Young Talent in Qingdao West Coast New Area”. In the past five years, the department’s teachers have presided over 1 national social science project, 2 Ministry of Education projects, and 10 provincial and ministerial projects. They have published 4 monographs, edited or participated in the compilation of more than 20 textbooks and teaching aids. They have published more than 80 academic papers, including more than 30 papers in SSCI, CSSCI, SCI, and EI journals, and 45 core journal papers. They have won 28 teaching and scientific research awards, including 2 provincial and ministerial first prizes, 2 second prizes, and 1 third prize.

 

Department Leadership Division of Labor and Responsibilities:

Lulu Cheng, Department Head: Fully responsible for the teaching, scientific research, and administrative work of the department, responsible for formulating and implementing the teaching, scientific research, and administrative plans of the department; responsible for conveying and implementing the notices and documents of the college; responsible for financial and material work.

Caixia Hu, Party Branch Secretary and Deputy Director: Responsible for the party affairs of the department, responsible for the construction of the party branch and the ideological and political work of teachers; responsible for organizing and leading the work of the department’s trade union; assists the department head in doing a good job in the scientific research work of the department.

Yincheng Zhu, Deputy Director: Responsible for the routine teaching and academic work.
