May, 10, 2021, Four volunteers majoring in Foreign Languages and Literature, 2019, of the School of Foreign Studies of UPC (SFS) gave full play to their language advantage to offer service, assisting Landong Road Community Health Service Center, Qingdao West Coast New Area with vaccinating foreigners against Coronavirus.

Their work mainly involves offering related services for foreigners in waiting area, service area, registering area, vaccinating area and observing area. In service area, medical workers needed to ask and register the passport number and other information of the foreigners and instruct them to fill in Informed Consent. Four volunteers, using their professional strengths, communicated with foreigners with fluent English, instructed them to sign the Inform Letter, asked their physical situation and answered questions about vaccination. After finishing personal information registration and filling in Informed Consent, four volunteers ushered foreigners to register in registering area on the first and second floor, and accompany them to get vaccinated in vaccinating area. They managed to bridge the language gap between medical workers and foreigners.

This volunteer service activity lasted for 9.5 hours, with more than 200 foreigner vaccinated. The volunteers work was highly recognized by medical workers and foreigners. The four girls doing the interpretation bustled among areas and went to places where there were needs. They were really helpful. A medical worker in the center said.

With regard to the volunteer activity, the volunteers also have different feelings. “I have participated in many volunteer activities, but this is the first time for me to do the accompanying interpretation, which is both a challenge and a brand new try. I’m glad to apply what I've learned in school to social practice, assisting medical workers in communicating with foreigners. Although the mission was successfully completed, I realized the deficiency that I have. Henceforth I’ll study specialized knowledge more harder so as to make contribution to society in the future, said Qiaojing, one of the volunteers. “Foreign friends are polite, and they queued up consciously, which realized the smooth run of our service work. In servicing, I deeply felt the hardship the medical workers bore, the rigorousness of anti-pandemic work. I give my‘likes’ to thousands and thousands of medical workers!” said Ren Ruyi, one of the volunteers.

In the COVID-19 pandemic, taking advantage of the strengths of foreign majors, SFS volunteered to translate anti-virus manual. Many student volunteers took part in the work of epidemic prevention and control such as volunteer translation and interpretation. SFS has all along been committed to fostering high-quality talents who “look global, act local”. Learning by doing, and doing by learning, students applied what they have learned, which also demonstrated the sense of social responsibility of SFS.
