“This ink is not bitter at all, because the taste of truth is extra sweet!”

“This ink is not bitter at all, because the taste of truth is extra sweet! Chen Wangdao said to his mother with a smile, which was a scene of the English drama Chen Wangdao and the Communist Manifesto in Foreign Language Corner on April 9th. The students performed The Taste of Truth, understood the power of Marxist truth, strengthened their faith in the ideals of communism, and told the story of Party history in foreign languages.

In order to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the CPC and to arouse the enthusiasm of teachers and students in studying the history of the CPC, the School of Foreign Languages created the Chinese drama Chen Wangdao and adapted the most educational third scene separately into the English drama “Chen Wangdao and the Communist Manifesto”. The play “Chen Wangdao” (Chen Wangdao, the first translator of the full Chinese translation of the Communist Manifesto) mainly tells the story of Chen Wangdao’s experience during his study in Japan and his journey after he came into contact with communism, the shock he received in Zhejiang first normal school after returning to China, and the story of returning to his hometown in the countryside of Yiwu to devote himself to the translation of the Communist Manifesto.

The taste of truth is somewhat sweet

In the dark night lightening by a dim lantern, before a wooden table, Chen Wangdao was absorbed in translating the communist manifesto in a shabby little wood room, facing a thick dictionary and stacks of papers. In 1920, Chen Wangdao, who had experienced the turmoil of the First Zhejiang Normal School, Chen Wangdao worked around the clock to translate China’s first complete communist manifesto into English, Japanese and Russian. Chen Wangdao's mother was worried about her son's health, and didn’t want to disturb his work, so she silently brought a plate of Zongzi so that her son could eat while studying the manuscript, and when she fetched brown sugar water and came back, only to see Chen Wangdao pick up the Zongzi dipped in ink and ate them. Faced with his mother's puzzled look, Chen Wangdao touched his mouth, took a look, and smiled: This ink is not bitter at all, for the taste of truth is extraordinarily sweet!

“Proletarians of the world, unite!”“Proles du monde, unissez-vous!”“전세계무산자, 연합하자

“Proletarians of the world, unite!” “Proles du monde, unissez-vous!”“전세계무산자, 연합하자!”

”The students in the show shouted their slogans together in nine languages, ending the scene with solemn, majestic music.

Mr. Chen Wangdao wasted no time in examining and verifying the translations of many countries. He ate Zongzi on the 'ink of socialism' and tasted the sweet of truth, fully demonstrating the power of Marxist truth and the foresight and strong perseverance of our Party's pioneering intellectuals. Sun Yitong, a 2020 undergraduate student of the School of Foreign Languages at China University of Petroleum (East China), who played Chen Wangdao, said that by performing the play, he had a special cross-space communication with Mr. Chen Wangdao as a modern young university student.

I did not know the story of Chen Wangdao before, I learned something about the history of the Chinese Party after enjoying tonight's drama performance. I was amazed at Chen Wangdao's perseverance and the determination of the Chinese people to fight. Although I didn’t know what ‘The Taste of Truth ‘was before, tonight’s performance gave me a new understanding of Chinese communism, “said Nev, a foreign teacher at the China University of Petroleum, after watching the play.

“The play is very exciting and powerful, especially shouting out the same goal in different languages makes me more confident and determined to fight for communism all my life, “said Sun Ruiqing, a 2020-year undergraduate student at the China University of Petroleum.

 A touching Party history education

Dean of the School of Foreign Languages, Professor Mao Haoran, attended the event.  The drama takes 'The taste of truth' as its theme, although the taste of truth is sweet and sour as well as bitter and spicy, and the taste is strong, but the Civic Education does not necessarily have to be done in a strong way, it should be taken unconsciously, which is like salt dissolving in water, so that students can feel the taste of truth imperceptibly.  the Dean said.

Zhang Yongning, Secretary of the Party Committee of the College of Foreign Languages, pointed out that the College should strive to combine learning and education with foreign languages, highlight the characteristics of foreign languages and enhance the effect of learning in the study and education of the Party history. It is also necessary to study and educate in the direction of the construction of disciplines and majors, and promote the high-quality development of the college through high-quality party building work. The school conducts a series of activities for teachers and students on “Telling the history of the party well in foreign languages”. Through micro-video collection, speech contest and red classics recitation, the School of Foreign Studies tells the history of the party in foreign languages and disseminates the Red Classics. The college integrates the party history story into the foreign language teaching, and integrates with the ideological and political education, the first-class curriculum
