Fortune rewards the diligent. The year of 2020 was an extraordinary year for the School of Foreign Studies. Facing great challenges brought by the school's adjustment and Covid-19 prevention and control, the School of Foreign Studies mobilized Party branches and individuals to provide ideological education, and thus withstood multiple tests by realizing stability through a smooth transition. A qualitative leap has been made in education, scientific research, comprehensive quality and living and working standards; the sense of acquisition, happiness and security of all have been significantly enhanced.
In order to honor collectives and individuals of the faculty who have made outstanding contributions in 2020, a commendation meeting was held by School of Foreign Studies in Xihuan 301 on January 7th. It was presided over by Associate Researcher Zou Weizhong, Deputy Secretary of School Party Committee. All faculty members and some student representatives of the School also attended.

At the beginning of the meeting, Researcher Zhang Yongning, Secretary of School Party Committee, read the top 10 news of School of Foreign Studies in 2020. Then, student representatives read the award speech of collectives and individuals recommended. Introductions to them are as follows.

Professor Mao Haoran, dean of School of Foreign Studies, head of several national projects and senior ranking personnel of Shandong Province, is honored by us all. With extensive knowledge and profound academic accomplishments, he is admired for his modesty and amiability; Humorous as he is, he’s meticulous about academic research.
“Think global, act local.” Prof. Mao told students not only to learn from the book, but also to apply what they have learned into practice. He noted that patriotism should be considered from a global perspective; with a more open mind and a broader vision, foreign language learners must always remind themselves to be a translator and take responsibilities.
“Deep thought, plain word.” This is one of the mottos of Prof. Mao. He can quote copiously from many sources, and vividly explain and simplify the complex academic problems in a concise and humorous style.
“Check yourself, reinvent yourself.” In addition to outstanding achievements, he has always been strict with himself. He told us not only to try to put ourselves in others’ shoes, but also to think critically and be diligent in both academy and work. With his sincerity and excellence, Prof. Mao is bound to lead the School of Foreign Studies into a brighter future.

Prof. Sun Daman, one of the top 10 postgraduate tutors, the Renowned Teacher in Qingdao Universities and “the Ambassador of Friendship between Tajikistan and China”, is a good example of our study and beacon of our life. As one of the founders of the Russian Department, Prof. Sun has always been down-to-earth and devoted to teaching. For the past five years, she has presided over 7 projects, including 1 National Social Science Fund Project, 3 provincial projects, participated in 2 National Social Science Fund Projects and 2 Humanities and Social Science Fund Projects of the Ministry of Education. In 2020, Prof. Sun and her team were awarded the first prize in the third Teaching Achievement Award for Postgraduate Education. Prof. Sun and her team managed to compile the first Handbook of COVID-19 Prevention in Russian, spreading China’s voice in fighting COVID-19. Dedicated to academic research and high-level education, Prof. Sun deserves respect from all of us.

As a young teacher of Postgraduate Foreign Language Teaching Department, Ma Jinfang is awarded the First Prize of Provincial Teaching Achievement Award and the First Prize of Teaching Competition for Youth Teachers. She is a guider and a companion on the way of English learning for postgraduate who regard Ma as a patient, tender and inspirational teacher.
Being diligent and rigorous, she devotes herself to academic research. She has presided over one university-level project and participated in the compilation of six textbooks. She won the First Prize of Provincial Teaching Achievement Award and the Special Award of University-level Teaching Achievement. With down-to-earth spirit, she strives for teaching innovation and lectures in many courses including “Reading and Writing of English for Science and Technology” “English Debate and Eloquence” “Postgraduate English Listing Speaking and Watching”. Receiving deep love from her students, Ma is adept in teaching and innovation and has gained outstanding achievements. For example, she was awarded the Second Prize of the 2nd SFLEP National College English Teaching Contest and the First Prize of Teaching Competition for Young Teachers. As a student who grew up in the China University of Petroleum(UPC) and as a teacher in UPC, she works conscientiously and is brave in innovating, adhering to the motto of the UPC，“Being Sincere and True”.
With her deep and sincere love for students, she imparts students knowledge and encourages students to make progress in study and daily life, through which students gain a lot. As humorous, wise and gentle as she is, she put her heart and soul into teaching and worked on in low profile without asking for any return. Looking back today, the students of her are all over the world. As a model worth to be learned by us, she is a shining star among the youth teachers!

Team Sun Daman and Team Zhu Shan were awarded the Advanced Collective of Youth for Contributing to the New Era. In the face of the epidemic, cherishing the dedication as teachers and the responsibility as Chinese, taking pen as their weapons, they used translation to fight epidemic. As conscientious teachers, they stand fast and remain at their posts; as committed Chinese, they fight against the pandemic with in-depth patriotic feelings.
Not a single Chinese can tolerate the rampage of the Covid-19 virus. As soon as the battle against the pandemic began, Sun’s team set out to translate The Corona-virus Prevention Handbook and published it in the Russian version. Zhu’s team volunteered to translate the handbook in English and managed to publish it in more than 20 countries and regions, including the United States, Canada and France. Their diligence and innovation have spread China's anti-epidemic experience around the world, which also show how China has taken up their due responsibilities
Standing on the dais with chalks in hands, they are indefatigable in educating students and fostering virtue all year round. With meticulous and assiduous attitude, they are not only adept in translation practices, but also they epitomize lofty morality. Ordinary as they are, with their hard work of translation, they shoulder the responsibility of the School of Foreign Studies UPC in combating Covid-19.

As time marches on, a new chapter is being written. As General Secretary Xi Jinping said, “The road ahead is long; striving is the only way forward. ” He also noted that even the shortest journey can't be finished without taking the first step; even the most trivial task can't be completed without taking action. As a saying goes, “If you want to go fast, walk alone; if you want to go farther, walk together.” Ceaseless struggle gives ample room of expectation for the future.
In 2021, we will press ahead with strong morale and concrete efforts for achievements. So let us remain true to our original aspiration and keep our mission firmly in mind. In the meantime, we need to remain sensitive to changes, respond to them with well-judged actions. In this way, the bright future of S.F.S is bound to be a dream come true.
