Professor Ma Rong of Qufu Normal University was invited to give a lecture entitled Meta-analysis and Its Application in Second Language Research at 16:00 p.m. on December 11th, in conference room 346 of Arts and Science Building. Professor Mao Haoran, dean of School of Foreign Studies, presided over the lecture. Zhang Yongning, secretary of the School Party Committee, Professor Wang Xinbo, associate dean of School of Foreign Studies, Professor Sun Daman, Associate Professor Han Shuqin, some of the professor committee, teachers and postgraduates attended the lecture.
Professor Ma Rong’s lecture introduced meta-analysis, a review method for integrating quantitative research. Compared with the traditional descriptive review, the results of meta-analysis are more accurate, comprehensive and innovative. It was pointed out that a considerable number of quantitative empirical studies have been published in the field of the research, but many of the results are not consistent. Meta-analysis is urgently needed to integrate the second language research and expand the research depth. The lecture started from the definition and advantages of meta-analysis, the general situation of meta-analysis in second language research at home and abroad, the operation steps of meta-analysis, the research topics and other aspects, then further elaborated from her own articles to explain the application of meta-analysis in scientific research, as well as the existing problems and future prospects of meta-analysis research in China.
At the end of the lecture, everyone had extensive and in-depth exchanges with Professor Ma Rong on the issues they were interested in. Professor Ma Rong's explanations are simple, systematic and comprehensive, and the listeners are full of interest.

Professor Ma Rong: She is a doctor of English Language and Literature of Central China Normal University, and the professor and doctoral supervisor of the College of Foreign Languages of Qufu Normal University. She is also the director of ESPC of the China Association for Comparative Studies of English and Chinese, the director of China English for Academic Purpose Association, the external review expert for Reading and Writing (SSCI journals) and Modern Foreign Languages and Technology Enhanced Foreign Language Education (CSSCI journals), the review expert of National Social Science Fund Project and Humanities Social Sciences Fund Project of Ministry of Education. She presided two National Social Science Fund Projects and one Shandong Provincial Social Science Planning Project, and published four books and more than forty papers in Language, Culture and Curriculum (SSCI), Journal of Quantitative Linguistics (SSCI), Foreign Language World, Modern Foreign Languages, Technology Enhanced Foreign Language Education, Foreign Language Education, Foreign Language Research, Journal of PLA University of Foreign Languages and other journals. Her main research field is applied linguistics and her research interests include foreign language teaching, second language acquisition and academic English.
