In order to improve the teaching level and teaching-based exchanges of young teachers, the 2020 Young Teacher Teaching Competition was held in the autumn semester. In the final round on November 14th, Ma Jinfang and Sun Shuo, two teachers of our school, performed very well and won the first prize and the second prize respectively.

Introduction:

Ma Jinfang, the lecturer, teaches English reading and writing for science and technology, English debate and eloquence and other courses. Her research direction is English teaching and translation. She has presided over one university-level project and participated in the compilation of six textbooks. She won the second prize in the 14th Lecture Competition for Young Teachers, the second prize in the Second “SFLEP Cup” National College English Teaching Contest and the first prize in Dongying Petroleum Equipment Zhenxing Cup English Competition, and got Certificate of UNLPP Interpretation Certificate P2 as well. Otherwise, as a key member, she won the first prize of provincial teaching achievement and the special prize of university-level teaching achievement.

Preparation process:

Lasting several months, the whole process of preparing for the competition was both toilsome and rewarding from sorting out the teaching plan, choosing the content, collecting materials, making courseware to rehearsing the teaching process repeatedly and reflecting after class. During this period, experienced teachers from the department and school also gave a lot of practical suggestions, so the final result also owes to all of them.

Acceptance speech:

I am very grateful to the school for providing such a platform for young teachers to show ourselves. We can learn and communicate with each other and I benefited a lot from it. A minute on the stage takes ten-year practice. Every teacher in the competition, especially the finalists, has made a lot of efforts, and they all have their own merits. Therefore, it is worth for other teachers to learn from. It is also a good learning opportunity to watch their lectures. In this process, I also find that I still have gaps in many aspects, and I have clarified my goal and direction of teaching work in the future. Thank you again for the recognition of the expert judges. I will take this activity as a starting point, continuing to explore new ways to do a good job as a teacher. In addition, research, serving as a strong back force, shall be closely integrated into teaching. I hope our school’s lecture competition will be even better!

Introduction:

Sun Shuo, the lecturer, graduated from the University of Nottingham in 2016 with a PhD. Since July 2017, she has been teaching in the School of Humanities and Law and the School of Foreign Studies. She teaches college English courses and her research direction is British and American literature. Lecturer Sun presided over three educational reform and scientific research projects at the provincial and ministerial level, and the department and bureau level. She published three papers as the first author, including one SSCI indexed paper.

Preparation process:

As a young teacher, there are many deficiencies in both teaching experience and skills. So this lecture competition is a big challenge for me. During the whole preparation, from the appearance and posture of the class as well as gesture language to the design of the whole teaching content, I am fortunate to get the enthusiastic guidance and help of many senior teachers and colleagues, such as Sun Xiuli. She put forward a lot of valuable suggestions. This competition is not only an opportunity to exercise but also a driving force to encourage us to make progress. I benefit a lot from the whole process, from designing lesson plans and making courseware to classroom teaching and after-class reflection. In this competition, I also have in-depth communication with other young teachers, which was a good learning opportunity for me.

Acceptance speech:

For me, this competition is a valuable life experience. I am very grateful to the school for providing young teachers with such a platform. Thank you very much for the patience and guidance of all the judges, especially the on-site comments of the four expert judges after the final, which points out some problems in our teaching and the direction for further improvement. The competition is over, and the results belong to the past. In the future teaching career, I will continue studying advanced teaching ideas and methods, striving to promote teaching and research level.

“The school works to organize a teaching team to guide the two participating teachers for this lecture competition. As one of the judges of the school lecture competition and the university lecture competition, I work together with other teachers to offer them suggestions in this competition. Our school has always organized a team of senior teachers to give advice to young teachers. To be honest, such excellent results they achieved are mainly from their own efforts. From the perspective of the School of Foreign Studies, we remain committed to improve the teaching work of young teachers, and also attach great importance to the training of them.”

In addition, Ms Sun said that this competition was crucial to the improvement of young teachers’ teaching quality and teaching ability. This year marked the 30th year of the lecture competition, during which many young teachers have practiced and improved their basic teaching skills. Ms Sun also hoped that more teachers can take an active part in the school’s teaching competition like Ma Jinfang and Sun Shuo.

“There are a lot of teachers who have grown up through this teaching competition and become the backbone teachers. For example, 28 years ago, I also participated in the school’s teaching competition and got the NO.1 among the people who got the first prize. I also hope that more young teachers will participate in the lecture competition in the future, which will be very helpful for the development of young teachers.” Sun added.

Han Shuqin, associated dean of the School of Foreign Studies, said we have paid attention to the cultivation of teachers’ teaching ability and comprehensive strength. The School held the teaching competition for young teachers at regular intervals and the competition about theoretical and political course to promote the teaching and learning from each other. And we also trained and guided the teacher before the competition.

This time we organized the competition about theoretical and political course for young teachers and invited the experts outside and inside of the School to evaluate and give the feedback, which contributed to the teaching design and performance of participating teachers. After that, the School organized a steering group consisting of professional teachers to direct them, giving precious suggestions as well as providing a valuable learning opportunity for other teachers.

These competitions provided a stage for young teachers to show their teaching skills and talents and provided an opportunity for their observing, communicating and learning, beneficial to improve the School’s overall teaching level.

Once again, congratulations to two excellent teachers. At the same time, I hope all the teachers and students of the School of Foreign Studies will follow them. Stay true to what we set out to do, continue to move forward and make new achievements!
