The Final of the 25th “21st Century•Coca-Cola Cup” National College Student English Speech Contest came to an end in Guangzhou on Oct 7th, 2020. Li Yingying, an English major student from Grade 2017, won the third prize, and associate professor Xu Xiaoyan was awarded the outstanding instructor.
The competition is sponsored by China Daily and undertaken by 21st Century English Education and Media. The topic of the semi-finals is “No Person is an Island”, and the topic of the final is “Seize the Day”. The semi-finals and finals are divided into several parts such as prepared speech, impromptu speech, and on-site questions and answers. Among 66 competitors from colleges and universities across the country, 12 competitors entered the finals after multiple rounds of competition in the semi-finals. The authentic pronunciation, fluent expression, unexpected and witty jokes and wonderful speeches of the contestants at the final demonstrated the superb abilities of public speaking, critical thinking and intercultural communication of contemporary college students. Li Yingying was calm, flexible, and outstanding in the competition, which fully demonstrated solid language skills, ground professional qualities and application ability, illustrating good results of English education and teaching reform in UPC.
The China Daily “21st Century Cup” National English Speaking Competition was founded in 1996. It is sponsored by China Daily and undertaken by the 21st Century English Education Media. It is the only official selection contest in China of the International Public English Speaking Competition (IPSC) held in London, UK. As the most international and professional English speech contest in China, it provides an international and professional platform for English educators and learners to learn and communicate. The winner will serve as a representative of our country to show the charm of Chinese youngsters on the international stage.
