"Alumni Face to Face" —— Ren Jiaoyan's Career and School Experience Sharing

The first phase of the Alumni Face-to-Face series of lectures of School of Foreign Studies, whose theme is “Guarding Your Dream”, was successfully held on September 26. Ren Jiaoyan, an outstanding alumna of the English major graduating in 2004, was invited to share experience about her school and career life.

Although Ren’s life is drifted with the wind and the current sometimes, she never stops learning. Meanwhile, she served as the chairman of the student union of the School of Foreign Studies in her junior year and successfully passed TEM-8 in her graduation year. “It is  wonderful to work with excellent people”, she said, so she chose to be an assistant for the general manager as her first job from which she learned a lot. Years of working experience and the clear future planning helped her obtain the master's degree in leadership development of Renmin University of China successfully. Ren Jiaoyan concluded that self-development requires one to be expert in one thing and good at many, thus can he succeed with his confidence and capability. And she added that it is important to listen to our inner voice no matter what decision we make, for we are the only ones who can guard our dreams.

In addition, Ren talked about the “three points and one line” model of career positioning, that is, through Holland's ability positioning, clarify what abilities and resources we have, why companies would employ us and what exactly we want. After talking about the occupational values in detail, she concluded that “All those chances are rewards of careful plannings.Ren Jiaoyan played a video which keeps her moving forward—Preparation guarantees success and all the cases in the movie are inspiring. Besides, this is consistent with the faith she emphasizes, that is, start with the end in mind and never forget original aspiration. Set goals, make efforts and keep trying so as to improve a lot. That is where the point of preparing guarantees succeeding is and what we need do to challenge ourselves and meet another version of us.

Habit-formation also plays an important part in our career planning, she addressed. People develop habits and vice versa. Learn from those who have the most excellent habits of thinking no matter in universities or in work, which will help us improve ourselves. When asking questions, students communicated with Ren Jiaoyan about how to make goals and their current confusions both in study and life.

Sharing her experience and thoughts on career planning, Ren Jiaoyan discussed the reality beyond the university in this lecture which was thoughtful and provoking. “When you are not sure what to do, just do something right and keep moving on. Do remember what your dreams are.” She added. What’s more, students all suggested that they were inspired by her story and decided to rethink themselves. They were determined to strive for their goals and to seek for excellence so as to shield their dreams and shoulder the responsibility of what this new age endows them.
