Academic Lecture: “Intensified foreignness in translated Chinese literary names--- A case study of Shen Congwen’s stories in English” delivered by Professor Xu Minhui

On the morning of September 3, the Graduate Student Cloud Academic Lecture and Lecture Series for Foreign Language Scholars of the School of Foreign Studies were successfully held at Tencent Conference.The lecture titled “Intensified foreignness in translated Chinese literary names---A case study of Shen Congwen’ s stories in English” was delivered by Xu Huimin, professor of Ocean University of China, Associate Professor of University of Macau and doctoral supervisor and hosted by Sun Daman, the vice dean of the School of Foreign Studies. And some teachers, postgraduate students and undergraduate students listened to the lecture.

This lecture consists of three sections. First of all, vice dean Sun Daman gave a basic introduction of Professor Xu's academic achievements. Afterwards, Professor Xu gave a detailed explanation of the translation methods of the names in literary works. Finally, teachers and students had a discussion.

At the beginning of the lecture, Professor Xu started from the translation history of names in literary works, classified the names of literary works, introduced their characteristics in turn, and selected typical cases to explain the translation methods.Then, she summarized the characteristics of Chinese name naming and the origin of names in turn, and introduced foreign scholars' views on the translation of characters’

names in literary works. Finally, Professor Xu gives a comprehensive and detailed explanation of the translation strategies of characters’ names in literary works by taking the names in The Border Town as an example.

In the section of discussion, the teachers and students of our school had a heated discussion with Professor Xu on their confusion and problems in translating characters’ names in literary works. Professor Xu answered the questions one by one by combining her own translation experience and put forward corresponding suggestions.

This lecture broadened the horizons of the teachers and students, stimulated their enthusiasm for translation studies, and laid a good foundation for students' future translation practice and academic research.
