“Topic selection and thesis writing in applied linguistics”, one of the 2020 postgraduate online academic lecture series of The School of Foreign Studies, was held at the Tencent Conference on July 24. Presided over by Sun Daman, Deputy Dean, it was lectured by Wang Xuemei, Professor of Shanghai International Studies University, with a number of teachers, postgraduate students of grade 2019 and some undergraduates of The School of Foreign Studies listening.
This lecture was consisted of three sections: basic introduction of Professor Wang’s academic achievements; detailed explanation on topic selection and thesis writing of applied linguistics by Professor Wang; and discussion between Professor Wang and students
For the choice of topic on Applied Linguistics, starting from the overview of the choice of topic, Professor Wang introduced the classification, guide and research ethics, with selected typical cases to make a detailed analysis; then, she gave advice on the choice of academic research topics from the perspectives of College Foreign Language Teaching, Translation Teaching, Business English Teaching, and the application of Linguistic Theory. Besides, she introduced the literature published in Applied Linguistics at home and abroad. On paper writing, she gave a comprehensive explanation from the aspects of paper structure, literature review, research methods and writing contribution. Finally, she emphasized that methods serve the research content.
In the interactive session, our students and teachers had a heated discussion with Professor Wang about difficulties and teaching in academic writing and and received targeted suggestions from her.
This lecture broadens the horizons of teachers and students in the academic research and stimulates the passion, laying a good foundation for students’ thesis proposal and academic research.
