“Translation Variation-- from Petroleum Translation to National Subject”, one of the 2020 postgraduate online academic lecture series of The School of Foreign Studies was held at the Tencent Conference on July 22. It was lectured by Professor Huang Zhonglian of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies and chaired by Vice Dean Sun Daman. Teachers of the School, graduate students of grade 2019 and some undergraduates attended the lecture.
First, Professor Huang, starting from the characteristics of the petroleum specialty of our School, put forward the viewpoint of “depending on oil for a living”, and then explained in detail the development of translation variation thought, the study of aim, the birth of translation theory and so on. Then taking time as the main line, Professor Huang talked about his experiences in his academic career. Subsequently, Professor Huang talked about the germination, development and maturity of translation variation from the perspective of favorable climate, geographical advantages and harmony of people. At the same time, integrated with his own academic experience, Huang emphasized the importance and necessity of the combination of theory and practice. Sharing a series of articles and columns published in China Translation, China Science and Technology Translation, Fujian Foreign languages and other journals, he described in details the research process of translation variation theory. Professor Huang has applied successfully the National Social Science Foundation Project several times.
In the interactive session, the students asked various questions about translation practices and study and Professor Huang all answered patiently. Meanwhile, he suggested that students should pay attention to methods in learning and learn from celebrities by reading monographs.
Through this lecture, teachers and students expand the outlook in the study of translation variation theory, and what’s more, it also stimulates students' academic interest, which is of enlightening significance for their study and research in the future.
