To commemorate the 90th anniversary of the founding of People’s Republic of China, School of Foreign Studies held a conference on the afternoon of July 1. Zhang Yongning, Party secretary in the school gave a lecture to party cadres.
Zhang Yongning talked, from his own working experience, about how the school pursued innovation and carried out reform; he made a comprehensive analysis on the major opportunities and challenges faced by the school at present, based on the school’s achievements during the 13th Five-Year period and main problems found in the 14th Five-Year planning; he also explained the school’s development ideas and measures for the next stage. Zhang emphasized that we should deeply understand the strategic intention of disciplines adjustment: Disciplines adjustment is not only intended to improve the quality of education system and the quality of cultivation; it can promote the integration of disciplines, improve the ecological system of disciplines, promote cultural inheritance and innovation, and foster a healthy campus culture. Under the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new era, the school should comprehensively implement the spirit of China’s national education conference, resolutely focus on the fundamental task of moral and intellectual cultivation, improve the quality of teaching staff, take the university’s advantage in science and particularly in petroleum research and develop foreign studies in energy so as to align with national development strategy and meet the need of regional economic development. To achieve that, the school is supposed to promote the cultural construction and international cooperation and strive to build up a first-class regional foreign language subject of this field, and ultimately provide a solid foundation for the establishment of the teaching and research-oriented school with a sharp edge in energy talents cultivation and in foreign studies on energy across the country.
Then Zhang stated the specific requirements for the 14th Five-Year Plan of the school. As he put it, the planning work should follow the basic principles, to be specific, “following the trends of disciplinary development, serving faculty and students, building a high-level research university, enhancing energy strategies and regional economy, spreading Chinese culture; he said we must be committed to the five strategies, that is, to strengthen our school in quality, talents, characteristics, cultures and systems. Moreover, it is necessary to recognize the present situation and change attitudes with scientific planning so as to face the upcoming challenges and grasp the opportunities.
To conclude, Zhang sent the wishes to all party members: We may not see the victory, but we must play a part in victory. All party members should follow the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics, brave difficulties and strive for a bright future for our school.
Centering on the theme of “New Era, New College, New Planning, and New Development”, this Party lecture is very inspiring and educational for party members. It is conducive to realizing the common vision of the faculty and students of School of Foreign Studies, to enhancing all staff’s sense of responsibilities and loyalty.
After the Party lecture, members of the leadership team of the school expressed their passion for the Party, the university, and the school and their confidence in building School of Foreign Studies in the new era. Then they made arrangements of summer vacation from many aspects including teaching staff, discipline competition, laboratory renovation, provincial education reform projects, etc.
