“The book is a timely help and a powerful weapon to combat the coronavirus, and it is also a good case of the cultural exchanges between China and Tajikistan.” On April 8, Nuro Rozoda Ferroz, deputy mayor on education and health of Khujand in Tajikistan, expressed his thanks to the translation team from UPC in a letter to Haofang, academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences and president of the UPC.

On March 3, Nuro Rozoda Ferroz sent letters of authorization to Ren Gengtian, dean of Confucius Institute at UPC, and to Sun Daman, professor of Russian Department, College of Foreign Languages at UPC, seeking help to translate the Handbook of COVID-19 Prevention for Tajikistan.

Professor Sun promptly organized a volunteer team of 8 Russian language teachers. They searched relevant documents, consulted medical experts, and translated China’s successful experience in combating the pandemic into Russian within only one week.

The Handbook of COVID-19 Prevention is the first book about preventing COVID-19 in Tajikistan. Copies of the book were already donated to Khujand (a city of Tajikistan) government departments, health and pandemic prevention departments, and schools. The Khujand government highly appreciates the translation work, and honored Ren Gengtian and Sun Daman the title of “Friend of the Tajikistan”.

“We have the responsibility to make our best contributions to fulfill the Belt and Road initiative during the pandemic,” said Sun Daman. In recent years, Russian majors at UPC have been doing studies on cultures of Russia and Central Asian countries. The first Confucius Institute of UPC was established in Khujand, Tajikistan.

Previously, Zhu Shan, associate professor of the School of Foreign Languages of UPC, led a team to translate the English version of the Coronavirus Prevention Handbook, published in more than 20 countries, to share China’s anti-pandemic experience with the world. The handbook once ranked first in the best-selling list of new books on the Amazon platform, and attracted the attention from more than 100 famous domestic and foreign institutions and media.
